Intimate instrumental music from 17th Century Venice.
This fascinating and appealing programme of music from early 17th Century Venice focuses on the burgeoning virtuoso and expressive style of instrumental music from this extraordinarily exciting and innovative period. Venice boasted several major printing companies who published much of the important instrumental music of the time from all around Italy as well as by composers working in Venice itself. Those featured in this programme include Marini, Uccellini and Frescobaldi as well as the native Venetians Castello and Salamone Rossi. On an intimate scale, with just three players, the music performed includes canzonas, sonatas, dance music and even vocal pieces. Thanks to the versatility of violinists Theresa Caudle and Emily White, who respectively also play cornett and trombone, there is scope for an abundant variety of instrumentation and array of colours. They play on faithful copies of instruments of the period and the basso continuo is provided by David Miller on the chitarrone, an easily portable and very practical alternative to the harpsichord or organ.
